Coach house (laneway home)
A coach house is a small, separate home built behind the main house on the same lot, often facing a lane, that can be rented out or used for family.
North Shore municipalities allow coach houses on many single-family lots, subject to lot size, lane access, servicing and design rules. They usually can't be sold separately from the main house.
For buyers, an existing permitted coach house can help carry the mortgage. For sellers, a lot that could take one is worth pointing out, with the municipality's rules to back it up.
